Well, actually, she was born a pegasus and became an alicorn thanks to Princess Celestia. It never specified when in the novel, and in the comics about their high school life she's already an alicorn. So we can assume she changed BEFORE high school.
Shining Armor was an awkward geek before dating Cadence, so here we can assume this is possibly when they're already dating.
Or this is just someone's headcanon/art; let's not read too deeply into it. xD

Have you read the comics Shining is actually a nerd/geek in a band...he hangs with nerds like Pon-Dexter and 2 other playing board games and sing rock but this really cute and I absolutely love there expressions
Come on, you can be popular and not be a dick. I knew a guy back in high school who was the "super popular quarter back" and was also the perfect person, no kidding this guy had all the girls and all the friends and was still the nicest person you will ever meet. That's kind of how i'v always imagined Shining, i just cant see him as the nerd.
And you are handling it sooooo much better than I ever could!/sarcasm
"Herp derp the popular kids at my school were mean to me, so that must mean all popular kids everywhere across space and time are meanies by default!" - not a direct quote, but that was basically the gist of your original comment.
By your logic, if some random black guy stole your wallet, then that must mean ALL black people are thieves!
In case you are too thick skulled to understand what I'm getting at, I'm saying that your shitty experiences at school don't give you an excuse to stereotype a group of people, the overwhelming majority of which probably never met you, let alone did anything to you.
