He speaks plenty. He spoke a few sentences in Applebuck Season in the beginning, and he spoke like 2 or 3 sentences in that one episode with the CMC doing the Gabby Gums column. He's also characterized as a quiet (maybe even shy), hard working stallion. He also has a soft spot for Smarty Pants (that doll in Lesson Zero).
As for Sombra, he's just a symbol of fear, and it seems that he may have been a villain for the sake of being a villain. All he said was "cryyyyyystalls...." a few times, "no... stop!", "slaaaaaaaaaaaaavess...", and laughed. I can't really respect him, he's too 2d for me T_T.
Big Mac has as much character as Sombra and he's been around for three seasons and yet people love him. Being shy and hardworking isn't any better than sombra being mean and evil.
Also I really believe that in some instances a villain can just be evil for the sake of being evil. Just a dark entity who seeks to conquer and corrupt everything good and pure you can't reason with it you can't sympathize with it. Its just pure evil. That's why I like Sombra.
I guess we can agree to disagree. I see a lot more character in Big Mac, Sombra not so much. His motives are simply to have crystal slaves and to thwart Twilight from defeating him. Big Mac, well he is a supporter for his family, he takes pride in his work, and he is almost a father figure to Applebloom and sometimes Applejack (Season 1 Episode 4). I mean yeah, pure evil is cool sometimes, but he doesn't have anything too unique for me to differentiate himself from other generic villains to me. He can instill fear through the minds of other creatures, which is AWESOME, but that's all he did for me. He just existed as a force, and had little character. Big Mac didn't just exist to me though, and he seems like a neat character for me. That doesn't mean he's the most fleshed out character, but no one really is.
I guess different taste and all, I just think we had enough sympathy for villains with Luna/Nightmare Moon being treated like a helpless victim, Discord being reformed and people even arguing for Chrysalis having no choice in needing to feed her people. Sombra was fresh. But whatever man I can respect your opinion. I'm just waiting for season 4s big bad
Vinyl Scratch is a background character and King Sombra is an antagonist that we are SUPPOSED to be paying attention to. Sombra was more of a force (of fear mostly) than a character. People like her more because she seems like a party/dubstep pony, and even though she only had a few seconds of screen time, people think she looks cool. That and she has an official (or semi official, I don't know how the cards are afilliated with the show, but they seem on par most the time) description of her character on cards like these. www.gameinformer.com/cfs-files…
I know, it's kind of a biased answer on my part lol. I do feel that Sombra, main antagonist, should have more development though, seeing that he played a crucial role in the episode. Vinyl doesn't have to be developed.
I feel she has a lot of good character. In Luna Eclipsed, she acknowledged that she was away from society for 1000 years, and because of that, she had a hard time fitting in. She also gained a lot more coolness when she made a cameo in Sleepless in Ponyville. A pony being able to enter other's dreams, seriously so cool O_O! I mean it would be cool to see her talk a bit more, but she has a pretty solid character c:
She's personally my favorite princess for the above reasons, and she has an amazing design (the more recent one is my favorite). I always liked the moon, and her being the embodiment of the moon and dreams just makes her that much more appealing to me.
Have to give the writing team credit for experimentation with King Sombra's character, portraying him as being more of a great menacing forc of evil like Sauron rather than a straight-on villain. BUT, as it stands, it kinda fell flat. Also have to give King Sombra himself credit for being so dangerous genre savvy, though - he almost outwitted Twilight Sparkle and her friends with all those preparations and traps he made that nearly ensured no pony would reach the Crystal Heart.
